Ever hold on to something for too long?

By: Christian Banach

Ever hold on to something for too long?

And after you finally let go, you wonder why you didn’t do it sooner?

A relationship.

A personal item.

An idea.

A job.

A process.

But why is it hard to let go?

Maybe you’ve invested a lot into it.

Maybe you can’t admit when you’re wrong.

Maybe you’re romanticizing the past.

There are five stages of letting go:

1. Denial.

You refuse to accept the existence of the problem or reality.

2. Anger.

You’re frustrated with the person, circumstance, or world.

3. Bargaining.

You cling to an irrational hope even when the facts say otherwise.

4. Depression.

You feel that you lost but haven’t entirely accepted it yet.

5. Acceptance.

You finally understand, accept, and move forward.

I’m in that situation now.

There’s a step in our sales process that historically delivered exceptional results.

But over the last year, that step has been unfruitful.

At first, I didn’t believe it.

I blamed the individuals responsible for the step.

Next, I started making tweaks, falsely believing small changes would result in a big around.

When they didn’t, I felt defeated.

I’ve begun to accept that the step is no longer viable.

It’s ok.

I’ve done everything I can to make it work.

But times change.

It’s time to let go.

We all go through this.

It plays out in our personal and professional lives.

Are you too holding on to something you should let go?

Be courageous.

The fear of an unknown future makes us cling to the suffering of our past.
