It was a beautiful summer night

It was a beautiful summer night.

79 degrees.

The sky was full of stars.

I was driving home.

Car windows down.

The radio was on.

It was Willie Nelson’s “On the Road Again.”

Willie was one of my late grandpa’s favorite artists.

My grandpa was a US Navy Veteran serving in the Pacific during WWII.

I was in the left turning lane about to get on the highway.

Then I thought, why was I hurrying?

I looked in my rearview mirror.

No one was behind me.

I turned the radio louder.

And I kept going straight.

Sometimes it feels good to take the long way home.
