This will spark debate.

The Milwaukee Bucks boasted the NBA’s best regular-season record.

They had Giannis Antetokounmpo, the NBA’s top player and future Hall of Famer, on their team.

The Bucks secured the No. 1 seed.

Many predicted they would win the NBA Championship.

Yet, the 8th-seeded Miami Heat ousted the Bucks in the 1st round of the playoffs.

A reporter questioned Giannis after the last game, “Do you view this season as a failure?”

The basketball superstar retorted.

“It’s not a failure.”

“It’s steps towards success.”

The episode made me contemplate the nature of failure.

Failure means not succeeding in a specific task or endeavor.

The Bucks were the favorite and lost.

To me, the Bucks failed to accomplish the mission.

Gianni’s point is there’s no failure if we learn from it.

But I contend that failure and learning can coexist.

The distinction lies in how one reacts to the outcome.

Take the Challenger space shuttle disaster, for example.

It represents both failure and learning.

The catastrophe was undeniably a failure.

Seven astronauts tragically lost their lives.

It revealed flaws in NASA’s decision-making, communication, and risk management.

Yet, the Challenger disaster also served as a learning experience.

It prompted significant changes in NASA’s culture, safety measures, and procedures.

Consider another scenario.

A client hires a firm to achieve a specific KPI.

The firm expects to meet the objective based on its expertise and skills.

However, the firm falls short.

But the project reveals key learnings to the firm.

I believe the engagement is a failure.

The firm didn’t meet the client’s objective.

But the firm can shift the negative into a positive if it applies the learnings to future projects.

It’s ok to admit failure.

If the mission isn’t accomplished, it’s a failure.

Take responsibility.

But don’t overlook the chance to learn from it.

If you don’t learn, you fail twice.

Never fail to learn from failure.

Never Fail To Learn From Failure
