Want the secret to achieving more of your goals and seeing your ideas come to life?
Many years ago, I owned a concert promotions business.
As a small business owner, I had to wear many hats.
I booked venues and talent.
I managed marketing and promotions.
I served as bookkeeper, HR, IT, and even handyman when things broke.
I took pride in my ability to learn and do each.
At first, this was necessary.
Budgets were small.
But as the business grew, I hired more staff.
Yet I found it difficult to let go.
Since it was my company, I took extra care and put in more effort.
I thought I’d do a better job than others.
However, I became a bottleneck.
As the business expanded, I didn’t have time to do it all.
Revenue plateaued.
And then, the 2008 recession dealt a blow.
I weathered the storm for a few years but was unable to recover.
I chose to close down.
That was a decade ago.
But the experience taught me a valuable lesson.
When setting goals or considering a new idea, we’ve been taught to ask…
“HOW can I do this?”
But more often than not, the goal or idea fades.
Instead of taking action, we procrastinate.
It could be because we lack time, knowledge, or skills.
Whatever the reason, the goal or idea never comes to life.
Sound familiar?
But now I know there’s a better question to ask.
“WHO can do this for me?”
This shift to WHO, not HOW, opens up new possibilities.
Now, when I set goals or have ideas, I ask WHO can help me accomplish them.
Then I run each through the 5 Ps.
1. Program
2. Probe
3. Provide
4. Partner
5. Pay
1. Program
What automations can I implement to achieve my objective?
2. Probe
What contacts can I ask that might voluntarily help me reach my goal?
3. Provide
What can I give of value in exchange for support in getting to my destination?
4. Partner
What opportunities are there to collaborate and more easily accomplish my mission?
5. Pay
What experts can I hire to fast-track me across the finish line?
Considering WHO can help me instead of HOW I can do it has been a game changer.
More goals reached.
More ideas implemented.
More time.
More money.
More focus on what I want to do.
Have a goal or idea?
Think WHO, not HOW.
