What is one of my greatest joys as a business owner?
Seeing my team develop.
I’ve proudly watched employees rise to become CMOs and industry leaders.
Unfortunately, not everyone has lived up to expectations.
Usually, red flags appear early on.
Yet, rather than acting on instincts, I often strive to make it work.
I invest extra time in coaching, training, and understanding their perspective.
But, 9 times out of 10, these efforts are in vain.
In poker terms, I keep playing the hand when I should fold.
Time is wasted.
Opportunities missed.
Small businesses can’t endure these relationships, as everyone significantly impacts the organization.
As I gain more experience, I now see a difference.
Developing someone with star potential.
Developing someone underperforming.
I thought I was helping the low performer by keeping them on.
But in reality, I was holding them back.
Sometimes, regardless of the reasons, an individual just isn’t a fit.
Persisting in these circumstances wastes not only the company’s time and opportunities but theirs.
They deserve the chance to find a better fit for their career development.
Ultimately, it’s what’s best for both you and them.
Here’s the hard-earned lesson.
Trust your gut.
It knows what your head and heart haven’t figured out yet.
