Why was I at the Harry Styles concert?

By: Christian Banach

Why was I at the Harry Styles concert?

It was a birthday present for my daughter.

She’s too young to go on her own with friends.

Lucky her.

So she had to go with dad.

The show was part of Harry’s ‘Love On Tour’.

The tour includes a whopping 179 concerts.

Harry Styles impressed me.

His energy.

His passion.

His ability to connect.

I thought, how does he bring it, night after night, singing the same songs over and over?

I was reminded of a music industry saying:

“No matter how often you’ve played (whatever the frequently played song may be), someone in the audience is hearing it for the first time.”

The saying got me thinking about my consulting business.

It can get repetitive too.

Interviews.

One-to-ones.

Discovery calls.

Usually, each follows a similar format.

And is repeated over and over.

But we must put ourselves in their shoes.

The job candidate.

The team member.

The prospect.

It’s the first time they’re hearing it.

It means something to them.

Just like the songs means something to the tweens and teens at the concert.

It’s a privilege to be a musician like Harry Styles.

It’s also a privilege to be in a leadership position where you get to conduct interviews, lead one-to-ones, and pitch new clients.

Not everyone has these opportunities.

We often take for granted the very things that most deserve our gratitude.
