Over the last couple of months, there’s been a strange change.
My daughter Bianca and I used to spend a lot of quality time together.
We would watch TV shows like America’s Got Talent and Stranger Things.
Play board and card games like Uno.
Have epic “keep it up” games with a balloon in our living room.
But now she’s in 6th grade.
Her interests are shifting.
She’s talking on the phone with her friends more.
Playing competitive sports.
Having sleepovers.
Dad isn’t as fun or cool.
It’s hard not to take it personally.
But I remember being her age.
I went through it too.
It’s bittersweet.
She’s becoming a young lady.
But growth and progress are only possible with change.
The same applies to business.
Employees acquire knowledge and skills, outgrowing their companies.
Companies change their structure, requiring different types of employees.
Clients’ priorities and budgets shift, leading them to other firms.
Firms’ strategic vision and capabilities evolve, creating poor fit clients.
Sometimes we hold on too long.
Embrace change, however strange it may feel at first.
Progress and growth are impossible if you always do things the way you’ve always done things.
